The Contrast between the OLED and LCD

In recent years, with the rapid advancement of display technology, OLED display has emerged as a major focus in the new generation of display technologies, attracting significant attention from both academia and industry. OLED display technology, also known as organic light-emitting diode technology, features a unique screen structure and possesses multiple advantages over traditional LCD (liquid crystal display) technology. It is increasingly being adopted in the consumer electronics sector.

The structure of an OLED screen can be vividly compared to a “light-emitting hamburger.” Each OLED unit resembles a sandwich structure, with the light-emitting material acting as the vegetable layer in the middle. Specifically, the OLED display structure mainly consists of a substrate (often made of transparent plastic or metal foil for support), an anode, an organic layer (including a conductive layer and an emissive layer), and a cathode. The conductive layer typically uses organic polymers such as polyaniline to transport holes, while the emissive layer facilitates electron transport and light emission.

Depending on the driving method, OLED screens can be classified into active-matrix (AMOLED) and passive-matrix (PMOLED) types. Active-matrix OLEDs are equipped with thin-film transistors (TFTs), which effectively reduce power consumption, whereas passive-matrix OLEDs excel in certain performance aspects. Unlike LCDs, which require a backlight module, OLED screen is a self-emissive material that does not need a backlight. This makes its structure simpler and brings numerous advantages, including wider viewing angles, faster response times, a more simplified driving circuit, easier color performance, and the ability to achieve flexible and bendable panel forms.

Based on the design principles of being light, thin, short, and small, OLED technology is particularly suitable for small to medium-sized panels. It is already widely used in MP3 players, mobile phones, and various portable digital devices. Although some OLED products are still in the prototype or exhibition promotion stage and have not yet entered full-scale practical application, their unparalleled display characteristics have gained widespread recognition in the industry. In the future, as the technology continues to mature, OLED display is expected to replace traditional LCD screens in more fields and become a mainstream display solution.
