Its high reliability stems from reduced connection interfaces, minimizing the risk of poor contact, while also offering vibration resistance, low electromagnetic interference (EMI), and low power consumption—advantages suited for industrial, automotive, and battery-powered applications. Additionally, in mass production, COG technology’s high automation significantly reduces LCD screen costs, making it a preferred choice for consumer electronics (e.g., calculators, home appliance panels).
Main Limitations of COG Technology LCD Screens
The drawbacks of this technology include difficult repairs (damage requires full screen replacement), low design flexibility (driver IC functions are fixed and cannot be upgraded), and demanding production requirements (relying on precision equipment and cleanroom environments). Furthermore, differences in thermal expansion coefficients between glass and ICs may lead to performance degradation under extreme temperatures (>70°C or <-20°C). Additionally, some low-end COG LCDs using TN technology suffer from narrow viewing angles and low contrast, potentially requiring further optimization.
Ideal Applications and Technology Comparison
COG LCD screens are best suited for space-constrained, high-volume production scenarios requiring high reliability (e.g., industrial HMIs, smart home panels), but are not recommended for applications needing frequent repairs, small-batch customization, or extreme environments. Compared to COB (easier repairs but bulkier) and COF (flexible design but higher cost), COG strikes a balance between cost, size, and reliability, making it the mainstream choice for small to medium-sized LCD displays (e.g., 12864 modules). The selection should be based on specific requirements and trade-offs.
